RE: Eldarado Cadillac Pulling A 5er !!!!!! Any Pics ?

The trailer was probably a Shadow... Silhouette, Shadow--I knew it was something like that. I heard about a olds toronado pulling a regular camper in Oklahoma years ago.The strange thing about it was the rear wheels on the olds were tied up somehow and the rear tires were removed. It was pulled mostly around larger citys advertising the hitch and hitch bars. Those ads were in the TLs as well.

RE: Eldarado Cadillac Pulling A 5er !!!!!! Any Pics ?

I remember back in the 70s there was a 5th wheel advertised in Trailer Life like that. I think the name of it was "Silhouette" or some such. It fit on a full size car. I never saw one in person, but they had pictures in the mag of the car performing like the VW above. It looked kind of Rube Goldbergish to me--I wondered if the structure of the car roof could sustain the hitch.

RE: Need some advice about front landing gear.

Well, I'm on my 5th set of landing gear. Take my word for it--if one side stops short of retracting all the way, don't hold the switch down thinking that you could force it up. You could be replacing two instead of one. Don't ask me how I know.

RE: Social Security.....I hadnt heard of this before

...So what happens when you use up your contributions, do they just stop under your "plan"?... Actually, I think that the last plan to privatize was for 50% in the "old" system. So, I would think that if you used up your invested funds, you would still have the government to fall back on. I don't remember all of it, but I think there would be a limit on how much you could use of your "private" funds--I don't think you could cash it all in at once.

RE: Social Security.....I hadnt heard of this before

What are the rules for the first of the month? I was born the first day of the first month... Sher For some reason, when you are born on the 1st of the month, you are considered to have been born in the preceding month. My birthday is the 1st of May. When I applied for social security at age 62, I received my first check in May--I didn't have to wait until June like I would have if I had been born on the 2nd through the 31st. When I turned 65, my Medicare started on the 1st of April, not May. I don't know why. As far as counting how much you paid in--by all means count the employer's share. He used his share of the payroll tax to determine your salary. He also used other benefits too, like medical insurance, etc. As far as being able to claim interest/dividends and being able to bequeath those funds that you did not use because you died--that was what Bush's privatization plan was all about. He wanted you to be able to invest 50% of you payroll tax (social security) in approved investments and that money would have belonged to you, not Congress. As for the argument that with this economic crisis people would have lost--yes, some would. We all lost out in this debacle but the markets have always recovered and ended up being worth more than when the stock market crashed--the timing is just not right for some. I assume that the "approved" funds would probably have been insured by the government so that a person wouldn't get wiped out by something like this.

RE: Social Security.....I hadnt heard of this before

Back to the OP's initial comments, one doesn't get benefits for the first month or the last month. That is to say, when you apply for social security benefits, your benefit checks start the month after the birth date of eligibility (unless you are born on the first of the month--different rules). In the case of the last month, you don't receive social security benefits the month you die--whether you die on the first day of the month or the last day of the month. My father died late in the month and we had to return that month's benefit payment.

RE: Who Is Confused???

...but do I care if I lose my privilage to park overnite cause some Joe Public complained and now they ban parking...like it or not the CG owner is exercising his right in a democratic society... Just my opinion--nothing to back it up--but I don't think Joe Public knows or cares about someone overnighting in a public parking area. I think the ones who care have an informed agenda.

RE: Who Is Confused???

It is interesting that a lot of people have an opinion about RVs using WalMart, Flying Js, rest areas, and other places to grab a few hours of shuteye. The opinions run from the "how could you embarrass the rest of us" to "who cares". RV parks are in business to make money--but so is WalMart. There is obviously competition and the RV parks can make a legal point that they are the ones that can best handle the RV business. But...if one wants to talk about unregulated camping, take a look at our long haul trucks. Those guys literally live in those trucks. The have TVs, refrigerators, beds, etc. but I don't think they have toilets and holding tanks. Maybe that is why you see so many plastic jugs along the side of the road filled with yellow liquid. You can see the trucks all along the highways at night, lined up in rest areas, along exit- and on-ramps, and (horrors!)in WalMart parking lots. Where's the outrage over that? Is that a part of Mr. Israel's plea to the commission?

Here we go again. Another tire thread. Everyone has an opinion--some just smell worse than others.

RE: Tripods. Yes? No.

1. At what point does a tripod become "needed"? 2. What should it do for me? 3. How can I know if I need it without buying one? Problem is I know of no one who has a tripod to try out. 4. What did it to for you? 5. did you buy aluminum or steel? 1. Never. Look at your 5th wheel. The landing gear jacks are already holding up the trailer. The part that overhangs is made of fairly strong steel and probably doesn't "droop" too much. The landing gear jacks don't give a lot, either. If one was looking to stop movement, he should look to some of the triangulated devices that attach to the landing gear jacks and the stabilizing jacks. 2. Make you feel good. And look like other folks who had $100+ too much money (opps, sorry). 3. See number 1. 4. Nada, nothing, zilch, zero. 5. Steel. Reese.

RE: Michelin Tires

Its interesting. I have read many posts about tires. There are threads that are started at amazingly short times since the last one was posted. People come across with all kinds of explanations--most contradict each other, even more don't use the proper nomenclature. That doesn't do a whole lot toward credibility. As far as I'm concerned, cheap tires are poor economy. I run Michelin XPS radials and have over 17,000 miles on them. I just had them rotated and balanced last week and they still look like new tires. I put about 12,000 miles on each of two sets of Merit tires that the manufacturer installed. The first set wore abnormally because of the axles. The second set (on new axles) wore very well; I replaced them because they started leaking through the rubber.

RE: Those annoying decals

Last year, I saw a 5th wheel (I think it was an Alfa See Ya--it had the nose that lifts up to reveal front windows in the bedroom). All of the graphics were removed. They had a nice new Dodge truck--all of the identifying symbols were removed. The Harley? Only the H-D logos were left. The owner and his female companion had tattoos on every inch of the exposed parts of their bodies. Go figure.

RE: RAM 3500 mega cab dually to pull 5th wheel??

I watched a friend put a nice dent in the back of the cab of his 2009 Dodge MegaCab 2500. I don't know if it is the same as the 3500 dually. He had a slider, but it is too much trouble to operate every time one wants to make a turn. So, he was pulling into a service station, and had to crank it around a little too much, and crunch, a nice big dent in a new truck. Man, I love my long bed!

RE: Buyer Beware!

Just bought a pack of Dial Gold soap for the MH, which is the normal brand I use. Found that instead of the normal bar shape, it has now been scooped out in the middle of the top and bottom, less soap more money. The main problem is that it is now impossible to hold while showering, and with the small shwers in RV's it is a big PIA. Time to find another brand. Zest and Irish Spring do the same thing. At least they can't change a dozen eggs !! :W:W I think that the soap design allows you to keep a better grip on the soap. I don't know about you, but in my shower, if I drop the soap, its staying there--there's no room to bend over to pick it up. :B

RE: Tipping When Getting Propane at CG?

I only tip food servers and barbers. Oh, and commissary baggers because they get no salary at all--tips only. At campgrounds, where the price of propane is usually way over the price at other outlets, I figure that the markup includes the salary for the worker bee. Actually, I think that the old custom was to not tip the owner of an establishment--if your barber or hair dresser owns the shop, no tip for him or her, but their employees are eligible for a tip. At most campgrounds, the person filling the propane tank is the proprietor, so another reason for not tipping. AAA drivers? Every time I've needed their services, they are usually in the truck and gone before I can even get around to thanking them (there is one that I'd have tipped triple digits to, but he declined--another story...).

RE: SYNTHETIC OIL FOR DIESEL

Having just switched from dino to Rotella synthetic(5w40?) I picked up 1 1/2 mpg empty and 1 mpg towing. The temp guage used to move around a little in the mountains but didn't this last trip. I buy all my filters on dieselplace.com and the oil at Wallyworld and take it to the dealer for a $15 oil change and lube. I'll be switching the tranny in about 3k miles to syn also. Is it worth it??? I think so but you'll have to decide. I've always used the GM computer for my oil changes (7-9k miles) and still will. Good luck! I thought that the Allison transmission came with synthetic. Isn't Dextron 6 synthetic?

RE: diesel engine respond

Be nice y'all! Harry is retired Air Force! He is no doubt always feeling a bit picked on by folks who never even owned a Ford bashing the 6.0 PSD. I know I've felt that way, even tho both the 2003 and 2004 PSD's we have average 65,000 trouble free miles each. Now he has a new 08 Ford diesel. Harry, I just smile when people say ignorant things. Don't let it get to ya, we all know better, right! ;) Now wait a durn minute! Who's bashing us retired Air Force folks?

RE: Be Careful Driving Through PA

4. Aren't federal CDLs required because trucks are involved in interstate commerce, thereby under the auspices of the ICC? There is no such thing as a "Federal CDL". My CDL says New York State Commerical Drivers License on it. And it has different classes of vehicles than the Pennsylvania CDL or the North Carolina CDL. It is only federal in the sense that it was manadated by the federal government. The federal government did not want drivers to have more than one drivers license, as that was a way around having ones driving privileges revolked. I, like many professional drivers, went thru the switch over where we had to be retested using federal guidelines with a test approved by the U.S.D.O.T. after having held a class 1 NYS license since 1970. It was a pita, like teaching a old dog new tricks. And the ICC? There has not been a I.C.C. (Interstate Commerce Commission) since the trucking industry was deregulated in the early 1980s. It may exist on paper, but has been replaced by the DOT and Federal Highway Administration as it relates to motor carriers. Man! Am I out or date! Thanks for the correction.
